Good afternoon, my darling family and friends. A beautiful sunny Monday October 10 is waking us as we are celebrating the much-needed victory of the Saints against the Seahawks.
This week,  I am looking forward to hosting on Wednesday, Oct 12, my RTL Saluting the Hispanic Heritage Month & Halloween at Brasa & the weekend festivities of Ogden's O What a Night!
The first miracle of today is the opportunity given to you to be alive and live life. So, make effective use of it daring every seemingly impossible task with renewed energy. I wish you happiness today. Have a beautiful Monday and an awesome week ahead.
O What a week! I had to pace myself to be able to attend like I did so many fun-loving and memorable soirees.

Glorious autumn weather blessed the guests at the lovely and delicious Historic BK House and Garden's Soirée in the Vieux Carré on Sunday, Oct 9. The gala raised funds to support the restoration of the courtyard-facing facade and honored Dr. and Mrs. Richard L. Strub for their longstanding and generous support of BK House..
The BK Historic House and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark built in 1826 and restored to its present condition by renowned author Frances Parkinson Keyes beginning in 1948. An outstanding example of the raised cottage, it was designed by François Correjolles, who incorporated both Creole and American features in a well-detailed residence that remains largely in original condition. As the only example of its type open to the public, the museum offers a unique educational experience to visitors and furthers the understanding of New Orleans history.

Last week I participated in a panel at the always fun Politics with a punch. Honestly at first, I feel very intimidated like a small mouse surrounded by pachyderms but it turned out that it was illuminating . As my longtime friends Jeff Crouere  said:" It was a great Politics with a Punch the other night at the Quarter View. The panel was outstanding, the crowd was fantastic, and the topics were plentiful. As usual, some were funny, while others were more thoughtful. Thanks to all who joined us and for all who have supported the show over the last 20 years. Our next one is a very special show, our 150th! "

Gov. Edwards Issues a Statement on More than 130,000 Women Receiving Breast Cancer Screenings Thanks to Medicaid Expansion

BATON ROUGE, La. —  Today, Gov. John Bel Edwards and Louisiana Department of Health Secretary Dr. Courtney N. Phillips issued a statement on National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the continued life-saving impacts of Medicaid expansion.

“Every October, we rededicate ourselves to raising awareness about the impact of breast cancer in our state and the life-saving importance of early detection,” Gov. Edwards said. “We stand with those who are fighting against this terrible disease and remember the loved ones who have tragically lost their lives. Thankfully, we also know when caught early the five-year survival rate is nearly 99 percent. Thanks to Medicaid expansion, more than 130,000 women in our state have received breast cancer screenings and diagnostic breast imaging. As a result, more than 1,800 have been diagnosed.”

“Louisiana has one of the highest mortality rates due to breast cancer, underscoring the need for all of us to stay focused on early detection,” said Dr. Phillips. “We are all busy, especially this time of year, and we know many women may have missed their routine health screenings during the pandemic. So, consider this your friendly reminder. Regular mammograms save lives. Make a plan today to get screened.”

According to the Louisiana Cancer Prevention and Control Programs, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in Louisiana and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths.

The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) reports that the mortality rate for breast cancer in United States is 19.4 per 100,000 women. In Louisiana, the mortality rate is 21.9 per 100,000 women.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year, while those 55 and older can switch to every 2 years or continue yearly screenings. Women at higher risk of breast cancer should start getting mammograms before age 45. To help lower your risk of breast cancer, you should maintain a healthy weight, stay active and lower alcohol consumption.

For more information on breast cancer, you can visit the CDC website.

Expanding Medicaid was Gov. Edwards’ first official act as governor on January 12, 2016. Today, more than 747,000 of Louisiana’s working poor have access to health care, including mammograms and other preventative health screenings, mental health resources, and substance abuse services. To learn more about the impact of Medicaid expansion in Louisiana, visit the Healthy Louisiana Dashboard.

“Home, love, community--that is what this play is about, that is what being Latino is about, and that is what we will bring to the audience every night,” said director Michelle Pietri. “I am excited to share how Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Hudes have painted the picture of Latino people and people of color in this beautiful story."

JPAS BRINGS HEART TO LIN MANUEL MIRANDA’S MUSICAL ABOUT "LA FAMILIA"--Country Roads Magazine

JPAS’s production will mark the first time the Tony- and Grammy Award-winning musical that rocketed Miranda to acclaim (in 2008, long before Hamilton’s opening) is performed in the Gulf South, and they’ve made efforts to do it right.

“I’m excited about this whole show, because I have family from Nicaragua, and I’m originally from New Orleans,” said Director Michelle Pietri, “and so much of this show is about finding what home is—whether home is a place, or if it’s really a feeling of family. Family is not always blood—family is who you love, and who accepts you for who you are, and how you are. And of course, if you have any Hispanic background, it’s so nice to see Hispanic people represented in a loving, positive, and uplifting way.”

Friday's events begin with the Royal Luncheon to the Jazz Second Line through the French Quarter to an afternoon Happy Hour at Pat O'Brien's, ending with the Captain's Party Friday night.
