A Toast to New Orleans January 23-31: Tabasco.Burlesque Opera/ Ella Brennan Dinner Honoring Emeril Lagasse!/ Show Ball 2/Tango Fire/ Krewe Du Vieux & More
Mardi Gras Poster Queen Andrea Mistretta with 2018 Queen of Krewe of Star, Grammy award-winner Irma Thomas and hostess Margarita Bergen
Darlings,
I am so grateful to Mother Nature for providing us this past week with some glorious weather that has taken us out of what seemed like a glacial ice age.
Prior to the weekend, our beloved New Orleans and its surrounding parishes were covered with dangerous ice that forced many events to be canceled or postponed, and that’s what happened to the Round Table Luncheon. Fortunately, we were able to reschedule it from Wednesday, January 17 to Friday, January 19 at noon at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel.
Due to the rescheduling, a few of our invited guests were unable to attend such as Mayor-Elect LaToya Cantrell, Al "Carnival Time" Johnson, Becky Allen, author Liz Williams and Wayne Phillips. But the ones who made it included such as luminaries as Grammy Award winner Irma Thomas, author Bob Carr and his wife Jan Carr and author Jim Blanchard. In addition, as entertainment, we enjoyed conductor Paul Mauffray‘s fabulous preview performance of “Tabasco: A Burlesque Opera” with Katy Domyan and Ken Weber, as well as Carl Mack, Marshall Harris and pianist Jim Walpole.
The bubbly was floating as well as the delicious Lucky Players Vodka with its President and CEO Eduardo Marquez being present.
Two of the highlights of the delicious luncheon were when Irma Thomas sang for the benefit of her adoring fans and Andrea Mistretta, the Queen of Mardi Gras posters unveiled her original oil painting and her poster of 2018 Mardi Gras Poster commemorating New Orleans Tricentennial.
I will skip the month of February and my next Round Table Luncheon, saluting upcoming festivals, will be on March 7 at noon at the Bourbon Orleans.

Can’t wait for Fat Tuesday? Head to the French Quarter and start your celebration early this year with the comically entertaining Krewe du Vieux. The Krewe du Vieux will consist of 17 "sub-krewes," each of which present their own interpretation of this year’s theme. Some of the more colorfully named sub-krewes typically include the Krewe of C.R.U.D.E., Krewe of Underwear, Seeds of Decline, Krewe of L.E.W.D., Krewe of K.A.O.S., Mystic Krewe of Comatose (a spoof on the Krewe of Comus), Mystic Krewe of Inane, and Krewe du Mishigas (an all-Jewish contingent).
This year, the parade will be held on January 27, starting at 6:30 p.m. Seventeen bands will be accompanying the procession, and the parade will begin on the corner of Decatur and Mandeville Street and wrap up on the corner of O’Keefe Avenue and Lafayette Street.
