Darlings,
Happy Valentine's Day!
It is Carnival Time and I always say that the first week of Carnival is my favorite.
This upcoming week is going to be a very hectic one for me, as I prepare for an extremely busy weekend. On Friday, I am participating as former Queen of Cork II and X in the Krewe of Cork Parade starting 2 p.m.in front of the Court of Two Sisters. Then I rush home to get dressed to be the Mardi Gras Mambo Queen of New Orleans at 6 p.m. at the New Orleans Museum of Art.
On Saturday, I will be participating in the wonderful Tableau of the Krewe of Stars at their first-ever ball. The big event will take place at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center in Metairie and is shaping up to be a memorable evening.
Dennis Assaf, General & Artistic Director of the Jefferson Performing Arts Society will reign as King for the night and everybody’s favorite New Orleans news personality, Angela Hill, will be his Queen. Sharing the throne with them will be Grand Duchess Becky Allen, Captain Carl Mack and Lieutenant Marshall Harris. In addition to the tableau, there will be a fashion show, live entertainment, dancing, a buffet and – above all – FUN!
For those interested in attending, tickets are still available at http://kreweofstars.com// This is something you won’t want to miss!

On Sunday, I will be escorting Fleur de Lis Wench, AKA Duchess Chiquita Linda in the annual Mystic Krewe of Barkus parade that will be sniffing its way throughout the French Quarter starting at 2 p.m. in front of Louis Armstrong Park. This year’s theme is “Pirates of the Crescent City” and, as always, it will be a spectacle of colorful canines. You will see the most clever and imaginative dog costumes and floats you’ll ever see anywhere. Guaranteed!
AHOY MATES, don't miss Duchess Fleur de Lis Wench and Caribbean Darling Wench as they sniff their way on Sunday, February 19 at 2 p.m. starting at Louis Armstrong Park. The word is out that they going to be sharing their bounty with revelers!
In addition, I am looking forward to attending the 11th annual concert presented by The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Titled “Uniquely New Orleans: The Classical Tradition and Jazz” the concert will be on Wednesday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m., in the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France on Jackson Square. Admission is Free.
LPO Music Director, Carlos Miguel Prieto, will be the conductor and Vernel Bagneris, the narrator. Musical participants will be Emmanuel Arakélian, organ; Germaine Bazzle, vocalist; Christopher Pell, clarinet; and James Dapogny and Ronald Joseph, piano.
I am also looking forward to attending, on Thursday, February 16, the French Quarter Business Association's Lunch Forum at Antoine's. The featured speaker will be my darling friend Mark C. Romig, President of CEO of the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation.
Last week I loved attending the fabulous New Orleans Opera production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeny Todd at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre. It attracted a younger set of patrons and attendance was probably the highest the local opera company has gotten in a long time. The production got great reviews from both the New Orleans Advocate and the Times-Picayune.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154077587210870.1073742792.581200869&type=1&l=40e060b7f0
I am looking forward to the next opera production of Faust on Friday, March 31 and Sunday, April 2. Also on opening night for Sweeney Todd, the company also announced the lineup for its 2017-2018 season, their 75th. The operas will be
October 6 & 8, 2017: Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci double bill
November 10 & 12, 2017: Jacques Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld (featuring the famous “Can-Can” song)
March 9 & 11, 2018: Champion, a jazz opera composed by New Orleanian Terence Blanchard about champion boxer Emile Griffith
April 21 & 22, 2018: The New Orleans Opera Association’s 75th Anniversary Celebration featuring some of the greatest stars ever to grace the local opera stage
And, in a “Special Announcement,” NOOA will be offering, for the first time, a Chamber Opera Series that will kick off in June 2017. A newly commissioned, 75-minute piece titled As One will grace the stage of the Marigny Opera House on June 2, 3 and 4. Two singers, a baritone and a mezzo-soprano, will portray the character of Hannah, a transgender protagonist as she attempts to resolve the discord between, herself and the outside world. Sounds fascinating and I can’t wait to see it!
This past Saturday I also enjoyed very much the always irreverent and fun Krewe Du Vieux. President Trump was the usual target of ridicule, as well as his dealing with the Russians. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10154078985270870.1073742793.581200869&type=1&l=b9bad77d66
Darlings, I am so excited about being the Mardi Gras Mambo Queen this Friday at the New Orleans Museum of Art. I hope many of my darling friends will show up. I will be wearing the beautiful black and red dress designed by talented Roy Haylock (AKA Bianca del Rio) when I was elected Reina del Carnaval Latino many years ago. NOMA LOVES MAMBO! A CARNIVAL BALL BLENDS LATIN MUSIC WITH NEW, SEDUCTIVE VENETIAN EXHIBITION
February 17, 5 - 10 p.m.
A Life of Seduction: Venice in the 1700s conjures one of Italy's most fabled destinations: a gloriously theatrical setting for festivals, balls, processions and Carnival revelry. Opening February 17, just eleven days before Fat Tuesday, the NOMA exhibition is especially timely for New Orleans art lovers and pleasure seekers with a taste for dramatic cultural displays.
Carnival revelers are invited to a festive Mardi Gras Mambo Ball on February 17 hosted by Cervantes Fundación Hispanoamericana de Arte, a nonprofit organization that promotes modern and classical Hispanic cultural traditions. State Representative Juan LaFonta and New Orleans businesswoman Margarita Bergen will serve as king and queen of the festive affair. AsheSon, a Cuban-inspired band, will perform along with other surprise musicians highlighting the rhythms of Carnival in both Latin America and New Orleans. Come dance to the conga, samba and second-line. Advance tickets to the event are $10 per person or $12 at the door. Elegant attire is suggested, masks encouraged, and a cash bar will be available. For more information and to purchase tickets, call Brenda Melara at 504.615.9070 or email
A Life of Seduction immerses visitors in the spectacle of 18th-century Venice: the era of Casanova, Vivaldi, Tiepolo, and countless others who spread Venetian taste throughout the world.
The exhibition continues through May 21 with a rich array of lectures, films and festivities. NOMA curator Vanessa Schmid wrote about the exhibition for Arts Quarterly.

Justin Vineyards & Winery is Wine Enthusiast magazine's American Winery of the year. In 2000, Wine Spectator magazine ranked Justin's 1997 Isosceles as the sixth best wine in the world in a list of the top 100, and the wine has continued to draw high scores from critics. As the enterprise matured with a vineyard and cellar team, he dialed back his wine-making activities and devoted more time to marketing. Justin continues to take part in blending signature wines

Ligeti Split:A mini-festival celebrating the music of György Ligeti
The Birdfoot Festival continues its sixth season with Ligeti Split, a two-concert mini-festival presented in partnership with the Tulane Newcomb Department of Music, Dillard University, and WWNO 89.9FM. This mini-festival, made possible by the Selly Foundation Fund, explores music by György Ligeti, one of the 20th century's wildest and most creative minds.
These two free concerts conclude Birdfoot's third Artist Residency (February 9-16), during which celebrated British pianist Danny Driver, violinist Jenna Sherry (Birdfoot Festival co-founder and Artistic Director), and horn player Roy Femenella will spend seven days in New Orleans rehearsing, teaching, performing, and inspiring music lovers and the next generation of musicians alike.
Special features of the 2017 February Artist Residency include Birdfoot Backstage, Danny Driver's solo recital, and an all-day workshop for Birdfoot's award-winning Young Artist Program.
Birdfoot Backstage
February 15, 2017, 7:00 PM
Dillard University's Cook Theatre
2601 Gentilly Boulevard, New Orleans
Free admission, advance reservation recommended.
Ligeti's early space-age music is familiar to many ears from Stanley Kubrik's films, but his music of the 1980s bursts with rhythmic vitality and diabolical virtuosity. This special edition of Birdfoot Backstage will explore Ligeti's vast tapestry of inspiration, ranging from echoes of Beethoven to medieval laments, African, Bulgarian and Indonesian rhythms, and the jazz greats Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans. It will also feature Ligeti's Piano Études and a speedy tour of the horn's musical symbolism from fairy tales to farewell songs, and include a full performance of Ligeti's epic Horn Trio (Hommage à Brahms).
Danny Driver in Recital
February 16, 2017, 8:00 PM
Tulane University's Dixon Hall
Uptown New Orleans
Free admission
Danny Driver presents a piano recital as part of Tulane University's International Piano Series. This concert features Books 1 & 2 of György Ligeti's notorious piano Études paired with Claude Debussy's lyrical and evocative Images. Described as "bold, exuberant and precise" [The Guardian], Mr. Driver's not-to-be-missed recital will be a treat to those already familiar with his "impeccable technique and musicianship'"[Gramophone], and a very rare opportunity to hear this seminal and electrifying music live in concert.
