Darlings,
Last week was just lovely.
I started my social week on Wednesday when I held my monthly Round Table Luncheon at Dickie Brennan's Bourbon House.
The Literary Round Table Luncheon was a complete success thanks to the informative and interesting speakers: authors Kathleen Mulvihill, Morgan Molthrop, Jim Blanchard, Kevin Michael Kelly; the talented entertainment by mezzo-soprano of Opera Creole, Givonna Joseph with Carol Rausch, Chorusmaster, Music Coordinator and Education Director of New Orleans Opera accompanying her on the piano and our own popular pianist, Jim Walpole; plus the delicious cuisine, the company and the flowing champagne/wines. Thank you all.
Hostess of Literary Round Table Luncheon Margarita Bergen with authors Jim Blanchard, Kathleen Mulvihill, Kevin Michael Kelly, , entertainer Jim Walpole, Givonna Joseph and author Morgan Molthrop

On Thursday, I was invited by Chet Harrell, the Regional Director of Alzheimers Association to be his guest at the 5th Annual Literary Luncheon, "Chefs in Kind," at the Cannery. I enjoyed so much the delicious luncheon and seeing and hearing my old-time friends authors: Tom Fitzmorris as MC; Chef John Folse, LA Cultural Ambassador; Ti Martin and Chef Tory McPhail of Commander's; Cynthia Le Jeunne Nobles and Chef Poppy Tooker. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153410702840870.1073742659.581200869&type=1&l=85e68cd9a6
On Friday, I had such a great time - like only my beloved New Orleans could produce. I stopped briefly at Havana Whites Soiree at the International Hotel just to see my darling old-time friends, have a delicious rum daiquiri, listen to the band as it was warming up and, of course, take photos.
I wished I could have stayed but I was looking forward to going to Le Petit Theatre for the opening night of the hysterical funny production of A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to the Forum. I had seen this play in NYC with Zero Mostel playing Pseudolus on stage and I could see the touches by funny man himself, Ricky Graham, who directed the play. There was a lovely reception following the play above Tableau and it was delightful seeing old-time friends in the cast and meeting new ones. Please do not miss it if you want to have a great time. It will run until June 5.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153413917605870.1073742661.581200869&type=1&l=9b0e24fb57

On Sunday, I actually stepped out of my beloved New Orleans and Louisiana to attend a birthday party in honor of my old-time friend, former journalist Marda Burton in Laurel, Mississippi. It was so lovely to see her surrounded

Well, this upcoming week is going to be another very special one.
The Greek Festival, the Fifth Annual Birdfoot Festival, the Jambalaya Festival and my favorite - the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience all will take place this Memorial Day's Week! .
I have been having a French friend Alain Roux staying with me for a few weeks. He has visited the Whitney and Oak Alley plantations but I promised him that he needed to experience the one and only "Sugar Palace" - the Houmas House Plantations and Gardens so we will visit it on Wednesday before his departure on Thursday.
I will be rushing to attend the annual Guardian Angel Award Gala that benefits Project Lazarus.
The elegant cocktail hour, dinner, auction and program will be held at Messina’s at the Terminal at the Lakefront Airport. This formal event will recognize two of Project Lazarus’ most esteemed volunteers and supporters, David Cortez and Anne Milling. Project Lazarus helps empower people living with HIV/AIDS by offering important support services.
On Thursday, May 26, at 7 p.m. we will begin the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience with an intimate wine dinner at one of New Orleans’ premier restaurants. Dine with friends or make new ones, while learning about the wine and food pairings directly from the vintners and chefs who created them. A different winery is featured at each restaurant.
I have been invited to the opening of Wicked at the Saenger Theater(May 25-June 19)
On Friday, I have invited to attend the press soiree to kick off the annual Food and Wine Experience. But, prior to that, at 2 p.m., at the Omni Royal Hotel, true wine connoisseurs, with a higher level of appreciation for fine wines, will enjoy the opportunity to sample rare and highly valued wines, each one boasting a retail value of at least $75. Elite wines from around the world will be presented by winemakers themselves. Vinola! also features participatingrestaurants that provide delectable samples of food to go with your upscale wine.
This year Royal Street Stroll will be on Friday, May 27 at 5:30 p.m. A true New Orleans "experience!" This definitive evening event of the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience brings together New Orleans’ greatest gifts – rare antiques, fine art, live jazz, and stunning historic architecture, with the world’s most outstanding wines. Shop the enchanting galleries of Royal Street while experiencing wine offerings at each stop and food tent along the way.
The Stroll is led "parade-style" by the Krewe of Cork, a world-famous wine industry phenomenon, with several renowned winemakers serving as Grand Marshals. So grab your wine-themed costume and join King Patrick van Hoorebeek as we celebrate the season of wine and food in New Orleans. You know I will be there as the former Queen of Krewe of Cork.
This year, there will be only one Grand Tasting and that will take place on Saturday, May 28 at 6 p.m. at the New Orleans Convention Center. The Grand Tasting experience at NOWFE showcases more than 1,000 domestic and international vintages alongside delicious foods served by over 75 of New Orleans’ finest chefs and purveyors.
The “King of Louisiana Seafood” will be crowned during the eighth annual Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off, hosted by the LA Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board. Ten chefs from across the state will compete for the coveted title and the winner will represent the Louisiana seafood industry at events throughout the year.
Wine connoisseurs will take pleasure in the opportunity to meet winemakers, ask questions and taste special appellations from across the globe. Novice wine drinkers will simply enjoy the experience of trying many new wines and learning what they like about different styles, varieties and price ranges.
WOW! Now lets learn about the Greek Festival: Greek Fest, May 27-29. This Memorial Day weekend, head towards the bayou for this family friendly event with food, live music, dance and one big Greek celebration! Expect a full weekend of Hellenic Dance performances, cooking demos, Cathedral tours and even a Toga Contest on Sunday!
Great Greek food, live music and entertainment, and family fun on the banks of scenic Bayou St. John, also featuring plenty of homemade traditional Greek wine, desserts, and more desserts! Live traditional Greek dancing, performed by the Hellenic Dancers. A live Greek band will be playing on the Bayou so you can get your Greek on! Tour our beautiful Cathedral, visit the kids area, get our annual poster, and visit our Greek grocery with delectable cheeses, dips, spices, and much more.
For chamber music lovers, this is the week of the Fifth Annual Birdfoot Festival. There will be a wide variety of musical offerings over the days between Tuesday, May 24 and Saturday, May 28, including tango performances on Thursday night at Café Istanbul, not to mention works by some of history’s greatest composers.

And, for those of you in a patriotic mood for the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend, our great American Armed Forces will be honored with a special show at NOCCA titled “Hoofing for Heroes.” Conceived, directed and danced by Heidi Malnar (of Gulf Coast Theatre on Tap) and 21 other tap dancers, these “hoofers” will click their heels (and soles!) to a program of favorite patriotic songs from the World War I through the Vietnam War eras. The dancers will perform routines made famous in the movies by such immortal dancers as Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and others, and a seven-piece band will play the theme songs of all the branches of the military.
Four performances will be staged between Thursday, May 26 and Sunday May 29; three in the evening and a Sunday matinee. All active and retired military personnel will be admitted FREE! Greek Fest
May 27-29, 2016
This Memorial Day weekend, head towards the bayou for this family friendly event with food, live music, dance and one big Greek celebration!
The Schedule
Expect a full weekend of Hellenic Dance performances, cooking demos, Cathedral tours and even a Toga Contest on Sunday!
The hours are as follows:
- Friday, May 27- 5 p.m.- 11 p.m.
- Saturday, May 28- 11 a.m.- 11 p.m.
- Sunday, May 29- 11 a.m.- 9 p.m.
Click here for the full schedule.
History
New Orleans was founded by the French, governed for forty years by the Spanish, and was also settled by large numbers of Germans, Italians, Irish and those of African-Caribbean descent. But the city also has a sizable population of Greeks, and every year descendants of one of the Western world’s oldest cultures celebrate their heritage with a festival celebrating all things pan-Hellenic.
Food
Souvlaki, baklava, dolma (stuffed grape leaves), spanakopita (spinach pie), and gyro sandwiches (pita bread pockets stuffed with lamb, pork and zesty sauce) and other Greek specialties will all be served up.
Music
Expect traditional Greek music, especially the distinctive sounds of the bouzouki guitar, as well as Hellenic dancers in colorful native costumes. Before long, you, too, will be shouting “Opa!” like they did in the movie’s wedding reception scene.
Entertainment
There will be entertainment for all ages, from kids’ activities to fun things for the adults to do, like dancing or renting a canoe to ply the serene waters of Bayou St. John. Lucky winners of random drawings may win trips to Greece and the fabled Grecian isles of the Aegean and Mediterranean seas. Those who wish to take something Greek home with them can purchase the latest festival poster or other souvenirs and handcrafted items.
The Cathedral
The cathedral houses what is reported to be the first and oldest Greek Orthodox congregation in the United States, founded in 1866. Visitors may tour the ornate structure with its magnificent, Byzantine-style dome. Frescoes and stained glass windows in the distinctive Eastern Orthodox artistic style greet the eye in every direction one looks.
Entrance to the festival is $7 – children under 12 admitted free.
Location and Parking
You’ll find Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral adjacent to Bayou St. John on Robert E. Lee Boulevard. for a Greek celebration with New Orleans flare.Â
Free off-site parking and shuttle service will be available. Be sure to check the festival’s website for parking details to avoid construction in nearby areas.
