Darlings, Happy New Year 2018!
I hope all of you enjoyed saying goodbye to 2017 and welcoming 2018.
I sure loved saying goodbye to 2017. It was not my best year but I was fortunate to have a healthy, peaceful but not prosperous 2017. I am looking forward to 2018 and pray that will be a great one for me as well as all of you.
As r Mayor Mitch Landrieu said" 2018 is a big year for New Orleans: It's our 300th birthday." So let's enjoy it !
As probably know, during 2017 we lost many great friends and last week we lost two additional pillars of the New Orleans Community: historic preservationist Mary Louise Christovich and Dr. Irving Rosen. May their souls RIP.
Hoda Kotb has been named the co-anchor of TODAY, making her official debut Tuesday just after an announcement by NBC News Chairman Andy Lack.
Kotb, 53, will join Savannah Guthrie at the anchor desk during the first two hours of the morning news program. She also will continue to co-host TODAY’s fourth hour with Kathie Lee Gifford.
I loved visiting my darling friend Hoda Kolb at NBC Today Show with my darling friend Sammy Steele during our visit to NYC.
This past week, it so cold that I actually stayed home for most the week since I hate cold weather. I only went to one party this past week and skipped all the celebrations for New Year's Eve because of the frigid weather.
2017 All Service Academies Ball

I was invited to cover the 2017 All Service Academies Ball honoring Louisiana Cadets and Midshipmen at the National WWII Museum and I loved it.
The Ball was A Patriotic Affair for Tomorrow’s Military Leaders. It was a special evening to honor the young men and women from all over Louisiana who will serve as future officers in our armed forces. This patriotic affair consisted of traditional military customs, dinner, and dancing. Colonel Walt Green, USMC and former US Attorney, was the guest speaker.
There are over 100 Louisianans who are currently appointed to one of our Nation’s prestigious service academies, including the Naval Academy, the Coast Guard Academy, the Army Academy at West Point, the Air Force Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy. These impressive men and women chose to forgo a traditional college life for one that includes four rigorous years of mental and physical training to prepare to become officers in the U.S. Military. Little Gem Saloon, New Orleans historic live entertainment venue, is pleased to announce a week-long tribute to iconic singer, songwriter, pianist, and activist Nina Simone with Grammy-nominated vocalist and drummer Jamison Ross.
For five nights, January 2-6, 2018, the Saloon stage will be filled with the music of Nina Simone, American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and activist in the Civil Rights Movement. Simone employed a broad range of musical styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop, and Ross will be employing his skill and style as he pays homage to the musical legacy of one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's newest inductees.

Each year the French Quarter Business Association welcomes and installs the Board of Directors and honors two members of the community for their contributions to the quality of life and business in the French Quarter. JOAN OF ARC PARADE CELEBRATES 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY on JANUARY 6, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.
Special Guests from Orléans, France will toast the parade and donate parade costumes from France
- 10 different Joans of Arc will be portrayed in walking procession in honor of 10th anniversary
- The parade is followed by the city’s Tricentennial celebration fireworks on the River at 9:00 p.m.
The Joan of Arc Parade, which first walked in the French Quarter in on January 6, 2009, in honor of Joan of Arc’s birthday, will celebrate 10 years on January 6, 2018, on what would be Joan of Arc’s 606th birthday.
This year's 2018 Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc court, announced and presented on Monday, December 18 at Eiffel Society, includes: City Council District C Councilmember-elect Kristin Gisleson Palmer as Queen Yolande of Aragon; Pierre-Loic Denichou as King Charles VII; and Martha Pinney, Maid of Honor, as Maid of (New) Orléans.
What began as a small procession with approximately 50 volunteers has grown to nearly 400 walking participants who portray Joan of Arc’s story in ten battalions comprised of costumed medieval characters, wooden props pulled on wheels, large-scale puppets, paper lanterns, banners in French and English, horses of all kinds (from stick ponies to real horses) and unique artistic items that are handed out by members and volunteers of all ages, from limited Joan of Arc hand-sewn dolls to handmade jewelry, from printed playing cards and prayer cards, to paper swords—and limited number of decorated wooden swords handed out by the Maid of Honor.
This year, the parade will be followed by special Tricentennial Carnival Season fireworks at 9:00 p.m., after the parade ends at Washington Artillery Park across from Jackson Square. The parade begins at 6:00 p.m. and ends at approximately 8:30 p.m. See route information below.
A special delegation of government officials and their staff from Orléans, France, will be in New Orleans for several days leading up to the parade, to celebrate the signing of an official Sister City agreement with New Orleans, Louisiana; to experience the Joan of Arc Parade and Twelfth Night festivities kicking off the Tricentennial Carnival celebrations; to learn more about the city’s cultural economy, entrepreneurship, water management, and education; and to develop more opportunities to partner on cultural projects and festivities.
The Phunny Phorty Phellows
The Phunny Phorty Phellows - "The Heralds of Carnival" Celebrate the start of The 2018 Carnival Season. The costumed and masked krewe will assemble on Twelfth Night, January 6, 2018, at the Willow Street Streetcar Barn at 6:30 pm.
At 7 pm sharp, the Phunny Phorty Phellows will board the streetcar and begin their ride to "Herald the Arrival of Carnival" down the St. Charles Ave. Streetcar Line. All are invited to come see the PPP off, beginning at 6:30, when the group starts to gather. Of course the Storyville Stompers will be there with them.
The Phellows are a historic Mardi Gras organization that first took to the streets 1878 through 1898. They were known for their satirical parades and today’s krewe members’ costumes often reflect topical themes. The group was revived in 1981. One Carnival historian has referred to the organization as the “Dessert of Carnival.”http://www.phunnyphortyphellows.com/

New Orleans Tricentennial Celebration to Kick-Off Mardi Gras Season with Lights in the Sky
Fireworks at 9:00 pm to celebrate New Orleans 300th anniversary will add to the revelry of Twelfth Night
New Orlenas, LA (Date) – After taking in the usual Twelfth Night revelry on January 6, 2018, New Orleans’ locals and visitors will head to the Mississippi River for a festive beginning to the Mardi Gras season, courtesy of the city’s Tricentennial Foundation.
“Mardi Gras season is one of the country’s most famous celebrations but the 2018 Mardi Gras season will take it up a notch,” said Mark Romig, President and CEO of New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation (NOTMC) and the 2018NOLA Foundation. “As we mark the city’s 300th anniversary, many signature events will draw visitors to New Orleans, beginning with our fireworks display.”
Festivities begin on Saturday, January 6 at 7:00 pm with the traditional streetcar ride carrying the Phunny Phorty Phellows. The krewe will make its usual trek from Carrolton Avenue down St. Charles Avenue, around Lee Circle, and back. Today’s Phellows follow the tradition of the original krewe that began welcoming the Mardi Gras season in 1878.
One of New Orleans’ newest Mardi Gras Krewes parading on Twelfth Night is the Société Des Champs Elysée. It travels its route on the Rampart – St. Claude Avenue Streetcar.
Twelfth Night also hosts a 7:00 pm parade in the French Quarter by the Krewe of Joan of Arc. This group will parade through the streets beginning at the corner of Toulouse and Decatur at Jax Brewery. The Joan of Arc parade walks annually to celebrate Joan of Arc’s birthday and Epiphany. Many travel to the parade dressed in gold to honor Joan of Arc, mimicking her statue on Decatur Street. King Cake is the traditional throw to viewers who attend.

It is not too early to start thinking about my next Round Table Luncheon on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at noon at the historic Ballroom of the Bourbon Orleans. You will be greeted by special guest Mayor Elect LaToya Cantrell and invited authors, architectural artist/historian Jimmy Blanchard and his new book Magnificent Obsessions: New Orleans Buildings and Residences; Radio and TV legend Bob Carr (The Packard Limousine); and Liz Williams, CEO and founder of the Southern Food and Beverage Museum and author of New Orleans, A Food Biography.
To set the Carnival Season 2018 going we will be joined by Al "Carnival Time" Johnson, 2018 King of the Krewe of Stars, along with Becky Allen, Marshall Harris, Carl Mack and pianist Jim Walpole will provide the live entertainment. In addition Mardi Gras Poster Queen Andrea Mistretta will be unveiling her 2018 Mardi Gras poster saluting the New Orleans Tricentennial.
In addition, Conductor Paul Mauffray will treat us to one or two songs of his upcoming Tabasco- Burlesque Opera (Janaury 25-29) at le Petit Theatre
Guests are encouraged to wear their Mardi Gras Costume to compete for prizes which will be given to the best! The $60, all-inclusive price includes a delicious, 3-course gourmet luncheon, champagne/wines and valet parking.
