Happy Carnival 2016!
It is Mardi Gras Time as evidenced by the festivities that I have been attending since January 6 -also known as the Twelfth Night - or Epiphany; and for the Latinos like me, Dias de los Reyes.
I started my Carnival Season by attending a reception hosted by Queen Yolanda de Aragon --- Sandra Savoye Dartus Horwitz at the beautiful residence of Alan B. Fisher at the historic Pontalba.

WOW! What a fun night it was! The Jeanne D' Arc Parade was awesome and Mother Nature blessed all of us with a beautiful night to enjoy it.
In between Carnival festivities, I was invited to attend the opening of FOGO de CHAO Brazilian Steakhouse at the JW Marriott. I just loved the place. It has two floors and a lovely balcony facing Canal Street where you can have a delicious meal. OMG! I left the sumptuous media opening for Fogo de Chao early because there was no way I could have eaten the delicious fare and drank the sinful Caipirinha cocktail: a delightfully refreshing and powerfully alcoholic drink based on cachaca without being pleasantly tipsy. I am glad I had a driver to whisk me away but I recommend it very highly. I thought I should give you some information about the Steakhouse!
Brazilian steakhouse chain Fogo de Chao opened Jan. 8 in the JW Marriott on Canal Street.
Fogo de Chão restaurants are churrascarias, a style of steakhouse that’s both traditional and popular in its native Brazil. Using a fixed price service format called rodizio, customers can eat their fill of various spit-roasted meats that waiters whisk around the dining room, with a buffet for sides, salads and other dishes.
Well, the festivities continued and my big next event that I was able to attend was the first annual Bal Masque hosted by the Link Stryjewski Foundation to benefit Kingsley House and Youth Empowered Project at the Orpheum Theater was spectacular. The costumes, the masks, the delicious food, the libations, the setting and the entertainment made the Bal to go down my memory lane as a very memorable evening and a great way to start the 2016 Carnival Season!
The Bal Masque featured Jimmy Buffett and the Grand Reefer Band, in addition to special musical guests, John Cleary and the Preservation Hall Horns who were joined by The Roots of Music and The Cha Wa Indians. Seven world-renowned chefs prepared the delicious party menu for the Bal.
I want to thank my darling friend Bill Hammack for inviting me to the Bal and my darling friend Carl Mack of Carl Mack Production for lending me the crown, the gloves and the gown. Proceeds from the Bal Masque will benefit the Link Stryjewski Foundation which was created to address the persistent cycle of violence and poverty, as well as the lack of quality education and job training opportunities available to young people in New Orleans. The Foundation will provide support to organizations that directly work to end the cycle of violence and poverty that affect the lives of children. On Sunday, Ii got a chance to celebrate my Hispanic Heritage and traditions. I joined the members of Sociedad Espanola to toast 2016 and celebrate Dias de Los Reyes (Epiphany ) at the lovely home of Juanita Pradel Uptown. As always, it was a wonderful afternoon of camaraderie -seeing old friends and meeting new ones.
I concluded my social week by attending, last night, the annual auction of Galatoire's Tables for the Friday before Galatoire's . It was lovely and Taittinger Champagne was flowing freely which helped the higher bidders get their tables. The average table went for about $500 per person. A lot of my darling friends were betting feverishly for tables and chairs and I loved it because the proceeds will benefit Galatoire Foundation, New Orleans Mission and Boys Hope Girls Hope Greater New Orleans Chapter.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153154825180870.1073742593.581200869&type=1&l=86b51e509c
Each year, the Galatoire Foundation Christmas and Mardi Gras auctions assist in achieving the goals of local non-profits. Noting its tenth season this year, the Christmas and Mardi Gras auctions have raised more than $1 million dollars for local charities.
Well darlings, I am really looking forward to my annual Round Table Luncheon celebrating the Carnival Season. This Wednesday, January 13, is my annual "It is Carnival Time" Round Table Luncheon at noon at Antoine’s! Wear your best carnival mask to participate in the "Best Mask" competition to prizes awarded for the most creative, and the most beautiful. This month’s featured speakers will disclose the latest Mardi Gras happenings complete with insider tips. Whether you are a seasoned parade pro or new to the 'krewe', join us as we toast the arrival of the Carnival season with plenty of champagne. Al "Carnival Time" Johnson will be singing his famous song, “Carnival Time” and legendary social columnist Nell Nolan will be sharing all the inside scoop about the 2016 Carnival Season.
Entertainers will include Rivertown Theaters' performers of their upcoming musical, “Sweet Charity.” Shelbie Mac is in the title role. In addition we will have popular seasoned New Orleans performers Carl Mack and past monarchsBecky Allen and Marshall Harris of the Krewe of Satyricon entertaining us with an unforgettable show. Of course, Round Table resident pianist Jim Walpole will be tickling the ivories for yet another memorable afternoon of merriment.
