A Toast to New Orleans August 28-Sept 2: Katrina Artistically Revised/ Cultural Collision/ We Love you New Orleans/ Southern Decadence Weekend & more
At the Surprise birthday party for Christian LeBlanc.(photo by Michael Langford)
Darlings,
The month of August has never been my favorite month to be in New Orleans. In the past, I used to be able to escape to cooler places such as St. Miguel de Allende in Mexico or Ibiza in Spain.
Not anymore, though, since August in New Orleans nowadays means New Orleans Coolinary Month, Museum Month, White Linen Night and Dirty Linen Night, in addition to and galas such the Summer Cure Chefs Wine Dinner, Gold Medal Chefs Gala and Hospitality Awards, Dickie Brennan's Louisiana Beef Picnic and Satchmo SummerFest, all of which keep me pretty entertained.
This past week was fun, fun, fun as I attended several fun events and I am sorry I could not get to all of those that I wanted to attend and was invited to. But those I did get to I enjoyed tremendously.
Ribbon Cutting & Opening of Deanie's Seafood Restaurant
The ribbon cutting and opening of beloved Deanie's Seafood Restaurant at their new, 2200 Magazine Street location, was lovely. The New Orleans Chamber of Commerce's Ben Johnson, along with Mayor LaToya Cantrell, celebrated with the owners of Deanie's Seafood Restaurants as they cut the ribbon at noon Tuesday, Aug. 21. Housed in a two-story building at the intersection of the Irish Channel and Garden District, it is the third location of the family-owned and operated Deanie's Seafood. .https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155442979805870&type=1&l=5e756c97b1
Dickie Brennan's Louisiana Beef Picnic
Darlings, I just loved the delicious Dickie Brennan's 6th Annual Louisiana Beef Picnic at Dickie Brennan's Steak House. I look forward to it every year and this year, Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse was once again transformed itself into an indoor picnic, complete with Louisiana grass-fed beef from Gonsoulin Cattle Ranch, as well as, for the first time, Louisiana Wagyu from Raines Farm.
Chefs from Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse, Palace Cafe, Bourbon House and Tableau expertly prepared various cuts of Louisiana beef to showcase their creativity. In true Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse fashion, they used local ingredients, adding depth of flavor to each slice. Of course, a Louisiana picnic would not be complete without libations. This year Glenfiddich Whisky joined in the festivities and was offering specialty cocktails and tastings. Craft beer from Urban South Brewery and Port Orleans Brewing Company were served, as well as wine from Wines of Substance and non-alcoholic drinks. Everything was delicious as well as the wines and libations using Glenfiddich Whisky. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155446213525870&type=1&l=c111a4d019
Surprise Birthday Party for Soap Opera Star Christian LeBlanc
What a fun evening at the surprise 60th Birthday Party for my darling friend Christian Jules LeBlanc, who stars on the fabulous soap opera, "The Young and the Restless." The exquisite Kurt Schon Gallery was the setting and host for the birthday party which gathered Christian's family, friends and fans.
Anais St. John as Lulu White - Queen of Storyville
Brava Anaïs St. John! You were Lulu White and your performance, along with talented pianist Harry Mayronne, was entertaining, illuminating and very accurate. I enjoyed meeting Denise Altobello, the writer of the Lulu White - Queen of Storyville script and seeing my longtime friend Maestro Dennis Assaf at the Westwego Performing Arts Theater.
I was so disappointed that I was unable to attend the reading of Poems by Cuban -American Poet and art critic Ricardo Pau-Llosa at the Mexican Cultural Institute.
Fortunately I got to meet him last night at the New Orleans Museum of Art. He was accompanied by Cuban-born artist artist Piki Mendizabal

On Saturday, August 25, I joined the birthday celebration of Huey P. Long at the 6th Annual Huey P. Long Look-a-Like Contest at Kingfish. I loved the Ramos Gin Fizz and camaraderie of being with longtime friends. Kingfish Kitchen & Cocktails celebrated the life of its namesake, Huey P. Long, with its annual birthday party and look-a-like contest.
At Veuve Clicquot Champagne Chicken Picnic At Effervescence
On Sunday, August 26, I was unfortunately unable to attend the Summer Opera Interlude, sponsored by Amici, the Metropolitan Opera’s Gulf Coast Regional Organization at Temple Sinai. However, friends of mine who went told me that it was spectacular!
Budding young local, national and international opera stars, Andre Courville (bass-baritone) and Irini Kyriakidou (soprano), sang beautiful arias and duets from famous operas and Broadway musicals, accompanied by Carol Rausch on piano. The concert was very well-attended and the two singers received several well-deserved standing ovations.
The concert helped raise funds for the Metropolitan Opera auditions which will be held on the District and Regional Levels on January 26 and 27, 2019 in Tulane University’s Dixon Hall. Winners at the regional level will go on to compete onstage at The Met in New York in late March and Grand Finalist winners there may be added to The Met roster for future performances. New Orleans has sent many great singers to The Met over the past 70 years, thanks to the annual competition, and our city is proud of them all!
Irini Kyriakidou and Andre Courville
This week is going to be very exciting as well.
Before I share all the events I want to make sure that you have put in your calendar:
