Darlings, Happy Carnival 2016!
I always say that my Mardi Gras time is the first week of the Carnival Season since I will be parading with the Krewe of Cork on Friday, January 29 and with my darling Chiquita Linda on Sunday, January 31 at the Mystic Krewe of Barkus. Chiquita once again will be sniffing her way royally as a Duchess and expect to see her very patriotically dressed since the theme is "From the Dog House to The White House."

As I see the TV coverage of the snow storm in the East, I feel blessed that we did not experience that kind of weather. Many of my friends are pleasantly stranded in Washington, DC since they went to the Mardi Gras celebrations in the Nation’s Capital.
New Orleanians did experience a wave of cold weather and rain that prevented me from attending the fabulous LPO's “Carnaval” concert and the annual Louisiana Appleseed "Good Apple Gala" at The National World War II Museum's Stage Door Canteen. This year it honored Jeff Richardson, Martin Stern and Ron Sholes of Adams and Reese LLP and Justice Harry Lemmon, ret., for research and advocacy to encourage the Supreme Court of Louisiana to create a court rule allowing continuing legal education (CLE) credit for attorneys who perform pro bono work to help indigent clients.
Sylvia Roberts, posthumously, for her passion and dedication to help victims of domestic violence, as well as for her efforts to prevent teen dating violence by educating youth about healthy relationships.
Sarah Vandergriff, Legal Director for the Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools (LAPCS), for strengthening our schools through her collaborative work on a legal handbook for charter school board members, educating them about laws governing charter schools.
Jessica Vermilyea, State Director for Upbring Disaster Response, for her extensive work in disaster recovery, helping families across Louisiana obtain housing assistance and funds needed to repair their homes, including helping clients facing title and succession issues as barriers to recovery. Congratulations to all of them.
Fortunately warmer temperature shined upon us so I could step out and enjoy some of this year revelry.
I think the highlight of my week was attending The Mystic Krewe of Satyricon’s 14th Bal Masque Le Bal des Beaux Arts: A Night at the Museum, hosted by Varla Jean Merman at the Frederick J. Sigur Civic Center in Chalmette was spectacular. The reigning monarchs were King Darric Cavalier and Queen Carl Mack.
The Queen costume going with the theme of Le Bal des Beaux Arts was the recreation of Erte's Symphony in Black and it was just very creative and beautiful. The tableau recreated some of the greatest art works to the delight of the audience. Burlesque star Trixie Minx was one of my favorite as she entered the stage riding a horse as one of the disappearing monuments and proceeded to do a strip tease. It was indeed a great night. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153175104655870.1073742597.581200869&type=1&l=e3d739ce32

On Saturday, I was invited to attend a farewell reception in honor of the Honorable Consul of Mexico: Ramon Gonzalez Jameson and his wife Cari at the Mexican Consulate. Hon. Sr Consul will be returning to Mexico and he will be missed!
That evening I was invited to attend the annual Krewe of Tucks's Coronation Ball at the Marriott. Love seeing the costumes and meeting the King and Queen: The Krewe of Tucks 2016 Royalty were 2016 King Tucks XLVIII Marc Frischhertz and Queen Tucks XLVIII Anne Eckert.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153177251860870.1073742598.581200869&type=1&l=461f225860
On Monday evening I briefly attended the King Cake Party hosted by my darling friend Jim Fitzmorris just up the street from me at the Theatre at St. Claude. The occasion was the announcement of the theatre's shows for the rest of the season. All of the upcoming productions are original works by Jim and other playwrights and performers, starting with a reprise of Jim's very popular one-man show, "Be a New Orleanian: Swearing-in Ceremony" in February. The rest of the season looks exciting as well and I will tell you all about it as the dates for the shows get closer.
This week is going to be very special not only because of the carnival celebrations but also because on Wednesday, January 27, The Historic New Orleans Collection will be presenting its annual collaboration with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, titled “A Fair to Remember: The 1884-1885 Concert Season in New Orleans.” Presented in collaboration with the Historic New Orleans Collection Wednesday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Louis Cathedral.

On Sunday, Politics is definitely going to the dogs with the Mystic Krewe of Barkus, the only officially licensed Mardi Gras Krewe for canines, with the theme "2016: From the Dog House to the White House."Countless canine candidates are expected to emerge as possible leaders of the most powerful country on Earth as they parade on Sunday, January 31, 2016.
While some dream of curling up on a couch in the Oval Office like Howllary Clinton or Donald the Dog Trump, others might want to embody any of many political pundits sniffing out the obvious such as James Pawville, Sean Hannitail or Glenn Bark. Of course, the political media will be celebrated in honor of all the dirt they dig up with the likes of Judy Woodruffruff, Chuck Waggin' Todd and Wolf Wuff Blizter.
The bi-ped world of Washington is soon to include the wonderful wags of the formerly under represented canine population. No matter what the polls might say, the next head of state might be a that of a Lab, Poodle, Pug or previously homeless mutt. It will no longer matter if you know who your parents are or if you have any formal education, much less Ivy League, to be elected. It is certain to be the most street small pack ever in power.
Dogs who want to be members of the krewe should get their humans to register on line atwww.barkus.org. On parade day, we will be staging the parade, pre-pawty parade and post-pawty parade at Armstrong Park starting at 10:30am. The parade starts promptly at 2pm and follows a 15-block route through the Vieux Carré, stopping at the VIP Reviewing Stand at Good Friends Bar, corner Dauphine and St. Ann, where VIPs (and those who desire to be VIPs) will toast the Royal Court. Curious observers are welcome to come watch the parade.

Cynthia Nobles Talks About Her New Work, The Confederacy of Dunces Cookbook
Cynthia Lejeune Nobles, author of a new cookbook titled The Confederacy of Dunces Cookbook: Recipes from Ignatius J. Reilly's New Orleans, will talk about the book at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
The presentation is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.
In John Kennedy Toole's iconic novel, Ignatius J. Reilly is never short of opinions about food and he's never far away from his next bite. Whether issuing sarcastic comments about canned food as a perversion, or taking a break from his literary ambitions with an occasional cheese dip, this lover of Lucky Dogs, cafe au lait, and wine cakes navigates 1960s New Orleans focused on gastronomical pursuits.
A Confederacy of Dunces Cookbook offers recipes inspired by the fare of Ignatius and his cohorts. Through a narrative and almost 200 recipes, Nobles explores the intersection of food, history and culture found in the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, opening up a new avenue into New Orleans' culinary traditions.
The book includes dishes inspired by Ignatius' favorites: macaroons and "toothsome steak" as well as recipes based on supporting characters, such as Officer Mancuso's Pork and Beans and Dr. Talc's Bloody Marys. A guide to the D. H. Holmes Department Store's legendary Chicken Salad, the likely offerings of the fictitious German's Bakery, and an in-depth interview with the general manager of Lucky Dogs round out the cookbook.
Cynthia Nobles is a food columnist for the Advocate of Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Acadiana. She is the author of The "Delta Queen" Cookbook and serves as series editor for The Southern Table, She is a member of the Newcomb College Culinary History Writers Group. She lives in Baton Rouge.
